Over the last 10 years more than one person has come up to us to say, "Hi Big Pete (pictured on right) and Big Spence. We know you are busy with Sports Monday activities, such as holding steady for promotional photographs, but if you do find the time, could you please answer this question: What is Sports Monday about?"
Even though you've kind of caught us by surprise, thank you for asking, and we think we can accurately say that Sports Monday is about meeting up somewhere each Monday to think about what to do for the rest of the day, or at least through mid-afternoon. That constitutes the approximately 2-hour business portion of our weekly meeting. After that we usually get on our bicycles. We ride without worry because our bicycles are old enough that we know they will never be stolen. In addition to enjoying that peace of mind, we bring a ball. We like the type of NFL football with the so-called Tackified tread. Point of interest: At the end of the day we have to throw at least 10 spirals in a row to be able to finish up and finally pedal home to our families. One last thing to note, or two: As part of our weekly event, we often have trouble finding whatever it is that we've set out to look for that day. Then again, we always end up coming across something equally interesting, or very nearly so as we continue to adjust our dreams. In fact, one of our mottos is, "There is no such thing as a wrong turn," even though our studies show that 62 percent are.
As a backup, our other motto is, "We are the people who go to the places that are between the places that other people go." Going to those places always brings us something new. For example, this morning a man in a pickup truck pulled up behind us and rolled down his window and shared a friendly warning along the lines of, "Hey guys -- hey, sorry, and this is not up to me -- but hey guys, all those "No Trespassing" signs means you could face a huge fine if one of the actual people in charge comes through." The man in the pickup truck said something like that and because we take all warnings seriously, we turned around and immediately pedaled back to the usually unmarked "Yes Trespassing" zones before miscalculating the trajectories of our high fives and finally calling it a day for another week, so again, thank you all for asking.
